The Role of Sustainability in Modern Dental Care

The Role of Sustainability in Modern Dental Care
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword at Novus Dental—it's a guiding principle woven into how we design our clinic, plan treatments, and interact with patients. But what does sustainability actually look like in a dental practice? And how does it affect the care you receive?
Here's how we approach conscious dental care, and why it matters for both your health and the environment.
Location: SAWA Rotterdam
Our clinic is located in SAWA, the Netherlands' most sustainable timber building. Built with renewable materials and designed for energy efficiency, SAWA reflects the values we hold as a practice: thoughtful design, responsible choices, and a commitment to long-term impact.
Choosing this location wasn't incidental. It signals our belief that healthcare spaces can—and should—prioritize environmental responsibility without compromising on comfort, function, or aesthetics.
Digital workflows reduce waste and visits
One of the most significant ways we minimize environmental impact is through digital-first dentistry.
Traditional dental impressions often involve disposable trays, impression materials, and multiple shipments to external labs. Digital scanning eliminates much of this waste. We capture precise 3D images of your teeth in minutes, with no messy materials and no need for retakes.
These digital records are used to design crowns, bridges, veneers, and orthodontic aligners—often produced in-house, which reduces transportation emissions and allows for faster, more accurate results.
Digital planning also means fewer appointments. When we can plan your treatment virtually and predict outcomes with precision, there's less need for trial fittings, adjustments, or follow-up visits. Fewer visits mean less travel, which reduces your personal carbon footprint as well.
In-house production for control and efficiency
We've invested in technology that allows us to fabricate many restorations directly in our clinic. This includes ceramic crowns, veneers, and bridges.
By keeping production in-house, we:
- Reduce reliance on external labs and the associated shipping
- Maintain tighter quality control over materials and craftsmanship
- Shorten turnaround times, so you spend less time in temporary restorations
- Minimize packaging waste and transportation emissions
It's a more efficient model—and it results in better care.
Circular procurement and medical waste recycling
Sustainability extends beyond clinical workflows. We carefully evaluate the products and materials we use, prioritizing suppliers who share our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Where possible, we choose:
- Reusable or recyclable materials
- Products with minimal or sustainably sourced packaging
- Suppliers with transparent environmental practices
Medical waste is unavoidable in healthcare, but we work with specialized recycling services to ensure that waste is processed responsibly. This includes proper disposal of amalgam (which contains mercury), sterilization materials, and single-use instruments.
Measuring impact: CO₂ transparency
Every consultation at Novus Dental includes an estimate of its environmental impact—including the carbon footprint of your travel to and from the clinic.
This isn't about judgment. It's about transparency. We believe patients have a right to understand the broader impact of their care, just as they have a right to understand treatment risks, costs, and outcomes.
By making this information visible, we hope to encourage thoughtful decisions—whether that's choosing to bike to your appointment, consolidating treatments into fewer visits, or simply being more aware of the choices we make together.
Conscious care doesn't mean compromise
Some people assume that sustainable practices come at the expense of quality or convenience. Our experience has been the opposite.
Digital workflows improve precision. In-house production speeds up treatment. Thoughtful material choices lead to better outcomes. Fewer unnecessary visits respect your time and ours.
Sustainability, in our case, isn't a separate goal—it's integrated into what makes good dentistry better.
Why it matters
Healthcare has a significant environmental footprint. Dental care alone contributes to waste, energy use, and emissions through materials, equipment, and patient travel. While individual practices can't solve systemic problems, we can make choices that reduce harm and set a different standard.
At Novus Dental, we see sustainability as part of our responsibility—to our patients, to our community, and to the world we all share.
An evolving commitment
We don't claim to be perfect. Sustainability is an ongoing process, not a fixed destination. We continue to evaluate our practices, explore new technologies, and learn from others in the field who are working toward the same goals.
What we can promise is this: we'll always prioritize care that respects both people and planet. We'll be transparent about our choices. And we'll keep looking for ways to do better.
If conscious care matters to you, we'd be honored to be part of your dental health journey.
